Breast Augmentation in Birmingham AL – Types of Implants

Saline Breast Implants are FDA-approved for breast augmentation in women age 18 or older. Saline implants are sterile salt water filled within a silicone shell. Saline implants provide a uniform shape, firmness and feel. Should the sterile salt water leak, saline implants will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.

Silicone Breast Implants are FDA-approved for breast enlargement in women age 22 or older. Designed in several types, shapes and sizes, silicone gel implants feel more like natural breast tissue than saline filled implants. Should a silicone implant leak, the gel may remain within the implant shell or escape into the breast implant pocket, but the implant will not collapse.

Gummy Bear or Cohesive Silicone Gel Implants are made of silicone gel within a silicone shell. Gummy bear implants are form-stable and maintain their shape even if the implant shell is broken. Anatomically formed as opposed to round, gummy bear implants provide more projection at the bottom on the implant resulting in the most natural looking breast profile. Thicker in consistency than traditional silicone gel implants, they also feel a bit more like natural breast tissue.

Round shaped breast implants (saline or silicone filled) provide a fuller profile and a more dramatic cleavage. Profile options range from low to moderate to high; higher option achieving the most projection.

Anatomically shaped breast implants (saline or silicone filled) offer contour that closely resembles the curve of a woman’s breast. Profile options are low, moderate and high; higher option can achieve even more projection.

Smooth Breast Implants (saline or silicone filled) are softer and move freely within the breast pocket which may provide more natural movement however, smooth implants may have some palpable or visible rippling.

Textured Breast Implants (saline or silicone filled are firmer and are less likely to move around inside of the breast implant pocket. Texturing offers some advantage in diminishing the risk of a tight scar capsule.

The incision site for breast augmentation surgery can be made in several areas. The most common and most preferred by Dr. Cotter, is under the breast where it meets the chest. Through the incision, a pocket for the implant is created. Depending on physical make up, lifestyle and desired result, the implant will be placed on top of or behind the muscle. Patients can still have mammograms, breast biopsies, and even breast surgery, if necessary. As well women who wish to breastfeed are able to do so.
