Dr. Cotter was born in Galveston, Texas. With his father serving as a general surgeon in the Public Health Service, he moved with his family to New Orleans, then Memphis and finally to Huntsville, Alabama.

Growing up in Huntsville, Dr. Cotter graduated from Huntsville High School. In 1978 Dr. Cotter was named as a Distinguished Undergraduate Scholar at the University of Alabama where he graduated with majors in both Physical Anthropology and Chemistry.

After graduating from the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine in 1982, Dr. Cotter trained in general surgery at Carraway Methodist Medical Center. He completed his Plastic Surgery training at the University of Louisville where he served as Chief Resident from 1986 – 1987. Dr. Cotter was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. in 1989.

Shortly after receiving his certification, Dr. Cotter began practicing in Hoover and in Alabaster Alabama. In 1993 he established Shelby Plastic Surgery (currently COTTER PLASTIC SURGERY), where he continues to provide the highest degree of excellence in diagnostic and surgical skills, as well as medically correct skin care services.
